Learning from Innovative Governance Concepts

We invite policy makers and urban experts to share some key lessons from innovative governance approaches for car traffic-reduced city centres in Europe.

The panel discussion will be based on the findings of a comparative analysis of seven progressive European cities, as well as insights from leading experts, and will address the following questions: What policies and regulatory approaches work best to support inclusive and participatory sustainable urban change? What are the lessons learned by urban leaders and planners around the world?

Thomas Schönberger

Thomas Schönberger, Scientific Project Manager “Smart Mobility”, Division “Digital Cities, Risk Prevention, Transport”, German Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR)

Since 2021, Thomas Schönberger has been working as a researcher at BBSR. His focus is on scaling innovative smart city solutions and their underlying business models, as well as exploring how sustainable urban mobility planning can be driven by governance innovations.

Corinna Altenburg

Corinna Altenburg, Senior civil servant, Division “Sustainable Urban Renewal and Transformation”; German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building

Corinna Altenburg is an expert on local climate action, funding mechanisms and multi-level governance. She has more than 15 years of experience working on interdisciplinary urban climate and urban renewal projects in academia and administration.

Benjamin Büttner

Benjamin Büttner, Head of EIT Urban Mobility “Doctoral Training Network” and the TUM Research Group “Accessibility Planning”, Technical University Munich

Benjamin Büttner has worked at the Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning since July 2010. He currently works in the fields of accessibility planning and decision and policy making. Urban and transport planning, as well as governance, are the foci of his professional skills.

Carlos Moreno, Associate Professor, Paris IAE – Panthéon Sorbonne University Co-founder and scientific director, ETI Chair « Entrepreneurship – Territory – Innovation »

Carlos Moreno is Associate Professor at the Paris IAE – Panthéon Sorbonne University in France. His works aim at promoting the transformation of our lifestyles and urban spaces. His has contributed to multiple projects of local governance and urban transformations in France and worldwide.

Holger Benz, Head of the Office for Mobility and Partnerships, District Office Karlsruhe

Holger Benz is Head of the Office for Mobility and Partnerships and the District of Karlsruhe. His responsibilities include matters relating to public transport and school transport, as well as general policy matters and supra-regional projects.
