We cordially invite you to the opening session of the Urban October at GIZ.
Dr. Evita Schmieg, Head of the Division 423 for Energy, Urban Development, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMZ) will open the event. Central to this vision are climate-neutral and resource-efficient cities that not only improve quality of life but also play a key role in preserving biodiversity and fostering resilient urban futures.
The strategic embedding of Nature-based Solutions in urban development in German development cooperation will be followed by the keynote of Harini Nagendra. Harini Nagendra is Director of Research Centre, and Director, School of Climate Change and Sustainability, at the Azim Premji University in Bengaluru. She is known for her research spanning over 30 years on forest conservation, and urban sustainability, with several seminal publications in both areas of work.
Finally, Kristian Lempa, Director of the Division Global Policy, Governance & Cities, connects the impressions gained with the work of GIZ in sustainable urban development. This is followed by an outlook on the events and topics covered during GIZ Urban October 2025.
