The name is the game: at this walk, all those who identify as women get together at night in pre-selected locations where they typically would not feel save to go out on the street. Through the simple act of walking and being in a space, public urban spaces are reclaimed and concepts of safety and propriety for women are reframed.
Women Walk at Midnight (WWM) started in India in 2017 and moved to South Africa in 2022 as a counter movement to the normalisation of violence against women and girls under the slogan ”we walk at midnight, because we can!” and is now coming for the first time to Maputo in Mozambique.
