WUF 12: Event

Breaking new ground

International Building Exhibitions (IBA) as a model for urban innovation

Over the past decades, the German format of International Building Exhibitions (IBA) has become an internationally renowned urban development format. IBA in cities or regions often explore blueprints for future ways of living and provide answers to social and spatial issues and challenges, not only through the design of buildings and neighborhoods, but also through new ways of appropriating urban and rural spaces.

IBAs have great potential as they bring together architects, planners, policy makers and communities to find holistic solutions to urban challenges and serve as platforms for experimentation, collaboration and knowledge exchange. The event will introduce the IBA model to the WUF audience, illustrate the IBA approach with a current example and discuss its relevance in other international contexts, as well as an approach for urban professionals around the world seeking integrative, participatory models that can address the complex challenges of urban transformation.
