The Brazil Center conducts the research project “State Capacity in Smart Cities for Online Participation”, which analyses the technological capabilities of smart cities and social participation infrastructures. The Center is promoting the webinar series "Future of online participation in cities", composed of five events – of which two will take place in October 2024. The initiative will bring together researchers and practitioners from both the public sector and civil society from Latin America and Europe, with a particular focus on Brazil and Germany, to debate online participation within smart cities and provide inputs for the research. Future-Proofing our Neighborhoods (Spanish Version): Launch of CitiesAdapt’s Model Approach: Your How-to Guide on Hyper-Local Climate Adaptation Measures

This session offers a first look at GIZ’s CitiesAdapt Model Approach, a guide designed to help city officials develop and implement participatory neighborhood-level resilience building initiatives. The guide provides six steps that cover the whole lifecycle of interventions with practical guidance and real-life examples. The event includes the launch of the document with an opening presentation and accounts of successful case studies made by local city officials and GIZ colleagues working in Mexico for the implementation of a climate adaptation demonstration project. The World Urban Forum (WUF) is the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. The World Urban Forum (WUF) was established by the United Nations in 2001 to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies and climate change. Over the past two decades, WUF has evolved into the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. Convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the forum is a unique non-legislative platform and one of the most inclusive international gatherings on urban issues. The first WUF was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 and has been held around the world ever since. The WUF12 will be held from 4–8 November 2024 in Cairo, Egypt and is co-organized by UN-Habitat and the Government of Egypt

COP29

The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) will convene in November 2024. It will include the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29), the 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 19), and the sixth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 6) that will convene to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and the new collective quantified goal on finance, among other matters. The 61st sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 61) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 61) will also meet.

8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR 2025)

The GPDRR 2025 is the global multi-stakeholder forum for taking stock and identifying gaps in the implementation of the Sendai Framework (2015-2030). The framework was signed by 187 countries, including Germany. It takes place every three years (every six years in Geneva). The platform serves to exchange best practices, innovative initiatives, and lessons learned in disaster risk management. The eighth session is the penultimate session before the Sendai Framework expires in 2030.
