Dr. Heike Litzinger, Head of the Division 423 for Energy, Urban Development, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMZ) will open the event. She will highlight the strategic relevance of inclusion in sustainable urban development and BMZ’s commitment to it. Following this introduction, architect Anna Heringer will give visual insights in how to practically implement inclusion aspects in architecture. She presents the inspiring example of the “Anandaloy Building” in Bandgladesh, which hosts a centre for people with disabilities combined with a small studio for producing fair textiles. Finally, Carmen Vogt, head of the GIZ Section Cities, connects the impressions gained with the work of GIZ in sustainable urban development. This is followed by an outlook on the events and topics covered during GIZ Urban October 2024.

The presentation showcases urban climate finance investments in Nature-based Solutions (NbS) enabled by the Gap Fund. We’ll highlight Savusavu (Fiji), where technical and financial support led to a coastal risk assessment and selection of appropriate protection infrastructure in a sea-level rise context. The session will also feature NbS projects in Brazil, sharing the methodology to assess NbS benefits developed in Rio de Janeiro and Campinas assignments, and its scalability to other cities, with the application in Palmas as an example. Cities are increasingly affected by heat waves in summers, and many municipalities are seeking solutions to protect vulnerable groups. Barcelona has over 360 climate shelters in public spaces such as school, libraries, or parks, providing protection during high temperatures. But do high-risk groups have adequate access to shelters during heatwaves? In this episode of the ISCN Global Mixer, Serena Mombelli and Patricio Reyes will answer this question and show how data-driven analysis can support human-centric urban planning and support policy making. The German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) will introduce the recently published BNK framework (“Berichtsrahmen Nachhaltige Kommune”). Whether the contribution to the 2030 Agenda or the Federal Sustainability Strategy, the brand-new BNK is designed to help municipalities measure and manage sustainable development locally. Developed with numerous stakeholders and piloted in more than 30 German municipalities since its beta release in 2021, the BNK now aims to be an even more versatile tool and widely accepted standard for sustainability reporting, tailored to meet the diverse needs of municipalities and their specific sustainability strategies. This session offers a first look at GIZ’s CitiesAdapt Model Approach, a guide designed to help city officials develop and implement participatory neighborhood-level resilience building initiatives. The guide provides six steps that cover the whole lifecycle of interventions with practical guidance and real-life examples. The event includes the launch of the document with an opening presentation and accounts of successful case studies made by local city officials and GIZ colleagues working in South Africa for the implementation of a climate adaptation demonstration project.
