ISCN Global Mixer: Digital City-makers: grassroot initiatives in digital urban development

Urban planning and governance face ever-increasing challenges in reconciling digital innovation with justice and sustainability needs. In this ISCN Global Mixer, Martin Bangratz (RWTH Aachen) will present the research project “Digital City-makers” and the role of grassroots initiatives in shaping the life and development of cities. Through a mixed-methods, cross-case analysis of three geographically diverse contexts, this research unveils various ways in which digital technologies are appropriated by and for communities. This session offers a first look at GIZ’s CitiesAdapt Model Approach, a guide designed to help city officials develop and implement participatory neighborhood-level resilience building initiatives. The guide provides six steps that cover the whole lifecycle of interventions with practical guidance and real-life examples. The event includes the launch of the document with an opening presentation and accounts of successful case studies made by local city officials and GIZ colleagues working in South Africa for the implementation of a climate adaptation demonstration project. This event is held in English. The Spanish version takes place on 31st of October. The Brazil Center conducts the research project “State Capacity in Smart Cities for Online Participation”, which analyses the technological capabilities of smart cities and social participation infrastructures. The Center is promoting the webinar series "Future of online participation in cities", composed of five events – of which two will take place in October 2024. The initiative will bring together researchers and practitioners from both the public sector and civil society from Latin America and Europe, with a particular focus on Brazil and Germany, to debate online participation within smart cities and provide inputs for the research. The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) will convene in November 2024. It will include the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29), the 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 19), and the sixth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 6) that will convene to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and the new collective quantified goal on finance, among other matters. The 61st sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 61) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 61) will also meet.
