G7 URBAN DEVELOPMENT AGENDA & THE ROLE OF ENGAGEMENT GROUPS

In this panel, we will discuss the role of Engagement Groups for the new Urban Development Track with contributions from Think7, Women7 and Urban7.

During the German G7 Presidency 2022, the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) coordinated a G7 process on sustainable urban development for the first time in G7 history. This effort, which also included comprehensive national and international stakeholder consultations has already ensured the topic to be prominently included in the Elmau Declaration:

“Cities are places of diversity and identity, exchange and integration, creativity, and solidarity. They are crucial to driving prosperity and ensuring equal opportunities for all. We acknowledge the significant role of cities, their associations, and networks as actors in our transformation towards sustainable development. We commit to foster exchange among and with cities. We task our relevant Ministers to develop a joint understanding of good urban development policy to be adopted at the first ever G7 Ministerial Meeting for Sustainable Urban Development, and to decide on joint initiatives for unlocking the full potential of cities to promote social, cultural, technological, climate-neutral, economic, and democratic innovation for the common good.”

Priorities set out for the G7 ministerial track on urban development did culminate in the G7 meeting of ministers on September 13, 2022, in Potsdam/Germany. A communique has been tabled, which highlights not only the vital topic of urban resilience with all its aspects, but also proposes:

  • the continuation of cooperation on urban development policy within the framework of the G7
  • a stronger recognition of cities as dialogue partners
  • the joint action of the international community towards sustainable urban development
  • The strengthening of urban resilience
