UPGRADING SUBSTANDARD SETTLEMENTS IN SERBIA BY A HUMAN-RIGHTS CENTRED APPROACH

The rise of the global pandemic has even aggravated and brought the major challenges in housing conditions of Roma and other vulnerable groups to the surface.
The improvement of living conditions within substandard communities is directly related to improved social inclusion of different socially vulnerable groups. It is evident that housing and urban development of substandard settlements needs to be addressed only through a broad integrative approach.
Through examples of concrete actions of enabling access to drinking water in substandard settlements in Serbia, the aim of this event is to showcase the importance of the multistakeholder and human rights-based approach in planning, developing and improving housing conditions of vulnerable groups, specifically Roma.
