Daring Cities Virtual Forum

The Daring Cities’ offer for local and regional government policy advisors, planning officials, national government policy advisors, and other technical experts throughout August to October 2024 consists of a series of virtual offerings and training workshops, emphasizing the theme of addressing the climate emergency through integrated and holistic solutions. The Virtual Forum is dedicated to exploring interconnected factors such as food and nature, within urban policies to ensures comprehensive outcomes for society and the planet.

1st Africa Urban Forum

Theme: “Sustainable Urbanization for Africa’s Transformation – Agenda 2063” The forum has been conceptualized upon the rising consciousness of the rapid urbanization in Africa, its opportunities, & challenges, and the need to create a continental scale forum to support an inclusive and holistic approach to unlocking the potential of urbanization in the continent.   Objectives: Raise the profile of urbanization as an imperative for sustainable and resilient development in Africa. Support inclusive and participatory human settlement development in Africa’s structural transformation and attainment of Agenda 2063. Facilitate dialogues and buy in for sustainable urbanization among Africa’s heads of state and Governments. Identify, discuss, and prioritize emerging and critical issues in inclusive and sustainable urban development from the perspective of different stakeholders. Exchange ideas, best practices and innovative approaches related to sustainable urbanization. Foster collaboration of different stakeholders at various levels to develop strategies, improve programme & project implementation outcomes, share resources, and build capacities.

Innovate4Cities Conference

To link cities, climate change science, and findings from the first Global Stocktake, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) have announced that the next Innovate4Cities Conference (I4C2024) is set to take place for the first time in Montreal, Canada from 10-12 September 2024.

Opening Ceremony – Presentation by architect Anna Heringer

Dr. Heike Litzinger, Head of the Division 423 for Energy, Urban Development, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMZ) will open the event. She will highlight the strategic relevance of inclusion in sustainable urban development and BMZ’s commitment to it. Following this introduction, architect Anna Heringer will give visual insights in how to practically implement inclusion aspects in architecture. She presents the inspiring example of the “Anandaloy Building” in Bandgladesh, which hosts a centre for people with disabilities combined with a small studio for producing fair textiles. Finally, Carmen Vogt, head of the GIZ Section Cities, connects the impressions gained with the work of GIZ in sustainable urban development. This is followed by an outlook on the events and topics covered during GIZ Urban October 2024.     

Towards ‘Resilient Cities and Communities‘

The February 6th earthquakes (Türkiye, 2023) highlighted the risks of current urbanisation practices, revealing the urgent need for a new urban development paradigm. We face a global era of ecological, economic, and social crises, making cities focal points for disasters and exacerbating inequalities. 4th OECD Roundtable on Smart Cities and Inclusive Growth
