From strategy to execution: How to build a sustainable urban development?

Online

To strengthen cities' resilience and sustainability, it is essential to understand the challenges and develop suitable solutions. This requires close collaboration between stakeholders, including citizen participation, and strong technical North-South city-to-city partnerships.  Convinced by this approach, Geestland (Germany) and Tozeur (Tunisia) have initiated since 2019 a participatory approach for the development of the Tozeur 2030 sustainable development strategy  In Algeria, Constantine and Draa Errich are developing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with the German cities of Aschaffenburg and Sindelfingen to improve local urban development and management.  LANGUAGE: French INVOLVED: Doria Adman, Hatem Bouden, Philip Jain

Digitally Supported Adaptation: Urban Heat

Online

The intertwined issues of climate change and rapid urbanization pose a global challenge. Climate change escalates extreme weather and ecosystem disruption, while urban growth heightens resource use, emissions, and land-use shifts, worsening the climate crisis. Urban heat, one pressing consequence of these changes, requires innovative solutions and data-driven policies, often powered by digital tools.   Our webinar will dive into the topic of global warming-induced heat in cities and introduce a user-friendly open-source tool that can quickly visualize and analyze satellite data, supporting practitioners working with urban planning and heat island assessments, environmental monitoring, outreach, and policymaking. INVOLVED Moderation: Joao Vitor Krieger  Input 1: deep dive into urban heat (speaker tbc)  Input 2: Timo Heidinger

In Brazil, the DUS Project a cooperation of GIZ with the Ministry of Cities has selected 12 municipalities with proposal for integrated urban development to work together. In Europe, the RiConnect Network of 8 metropolitan areas are coming together to rethink, transform and integrate mobility infrastructures. Both experiences have great focus on implement peer learning methodologies to make the group process richer than just individual approaches INVOLVED Speakers: Daniel Wagner (GIZ Brazil) and Roland Krebs (Superwien)

Embedding Equity and Inclusivity in Sustainable Infrastructure

Online

Ensuring that sustainable infrastructure projects contribute to reducing social inequalities can be a daunting task for cities. Not considering the needs of marginalised communities or lacking consultation can lead to opposition by local communities – in many cases causing delays to implementation. How effectively communities are represented in project design, planning and implementation will have a direct impact on the quality and sustainability of the projects. The C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) will offer an overview of its Equity & Inclusion approach, sharing key considerations and components that are essential to designing equitable and inclusive sustainable infrastructure projects. The approach is split into three key pillars – I. Community Engagement, II. Project Design, III. Equitable Benefits. With this webinar, we would like to raise awareness about the significance of embedding E&I in all steps of the preparation of sustainable infrastructure projects and share best practices from CFF projects. INVOLVED Hanna Maxine Müller Yasar Cohen-Shah (C40 Cities) City Speaker: tbd

WOPs: Peer Partnerships between municiple service providers as catalysts for resilient urban development – best practice from the water and solid waste sector

Online

The New Urban Agenda of the United Nations emphasises the importance of effective municipal enterprises for sustainable, climate-resilient and inclusive urban development. The Member States are committed to taking measures that will strengthen the performance capability of water and solid waste utilities. German municipal utilities in both sectors have the potential and are willing to participate in the effort of strengthening the local delivery of urban basic services in partner countries. They possess knowledge, skills and experience needed on the ground. Through peer-to-peer partnerships (Water Operators` Partnerships – WOPs and Solid Waste Operator Partnerships - SWOPS) mentee utilities obtain field-tested know-how on operational, technical, financial and management aspect of urban basic service delivery. In this session we will introduce the (S)WOPs approach, explore benefits, and provide helpful advice on framing and financing WOPs and SWOPs in your GIZ project.
